Centurion D6 Smart Installation in Wellington – Domestic Gate Upgrade
Cape Winelands Automation recently completed another Centurion D6 Smart installation in Wellington for a residential customer.
The customer specifically requested the Centurion D6 Smart because we installed the same model at one of his other properties several years ago. He has enjoyed reliable service from that installation ever since. Therefore, he wanted the same proven model for this property.
A Centurion D5 Smart would also have suited this domestic application. However, the customer’s previous experience influenced his decision. He knew the D6 Smart and had already seen how it performed at his other property.
Preparing a Solid Base for the D6 Smart
A reliable gate motor installation starts with more than simply mounting the motor.
First, we prepared the mounting area and added extra reinforcement. Our technician welded additional metal to the base plate to create a strong mounting structure for the new D6 Smart.
This preparation helps keep the motor securely positioned during normal gate operation. In addition, correct positioning allows the motor drive system to work properly with the gate rack.

The photograph shows the installation in progress, with sparks flying as our technician welds the reinforced base.
Rather than simply mounting the new motor onto the existing structure, we prepared the base to provide a solid foundation for the installation.
Once the base work was complete, we could move on to assembling and positioning the Centurion D6 Smart.
Installing the Centurion D6 Smart
Once we finished the reinforced base, our technician positioned the Centurion D6 Smart and began assembling the gate motor.
The D6 Smart uses a 24V DC motor system and can handle sliding gates weighing up to 600 kg. Centurion also rates the motor for up to 150 operations per day.
Depending on the gate and operating conditions, the D6 Smart can reach speeds of up to approximately 35 metres per minute.
For this domestic installation, the D5 Smart would also have handled the customer’s requirements. The D5 Smart supports gates weighing up to 500 kg and also carries a rating of up to 150 operations per day.
D6 Smart vs D5 Smart
Both motors belong to Centurion’s Smart range. However, they have different maximum gate capacities.
| Specification | Centurion D5 Smart | Centurion D6 Smart |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum gate mass | 500 kg | 600 kg |
| Motor system | 24V DC | 24V DC |
| Maximum daily operations | 150 | 150 |
| Maximum speed | Up to 35 m/min* | Up to 35 m/min* |
| Smart-series operator | Yes | Yes |
Actual speed depends on the gate, load and installation conditions.
So, why did the customer choose the D6 Smart?
The answer was simple. We had installed a D6 Smart at another one of his properties several years ago. He had experienced reliable operation from that motor. Therefore, he specifically requested another D6 Smart for this property.
The D6 Smart offered more gate-weight capacity than the D5 Smart. However, the customer did not choose it simply because it was the larger motor. His previous experience played the biggest role in his decision.

This photograph shows the motor during the installation process. At this stage, our technician was assembling and positioning the D6 Smart on the reinforced mounting base.
Correct positioning matters because the motor must work smoothly with the gate rack and drive system. A secure mounting position also helps maintain correct alignment during everyday operation.
After this stage, we completed the motor assembly and prepared the system for final testing.
Fully Assembled Centurion D6 Smart
With the reinforced mounting base prepared and the motor positioned correctly, the Centurion D6 Smart could be fully assembled and prepared for final testing.
The D6 Smart is designed around a robust 24V DC drive system and is suitable for sliding gates of up to 600 kg. Its capacity gives it additional headroom compared with the D5 Smart, which is rated for gates up to 500 kg.
For this installation, however, the customer’s decision was not simply about needing the larger motor. He had already experienced a D6 Smart installation at another property and had been happy with its performance over several years. That previous experience was the main reason he specifically requested the same model again.
This is something we encounter with gate motor installations: the technically suitable option is not always the model the customer ultimately prefers. Our role is to make sure the customer understands the available options and then install the motor that best matches their requirements and choice.

Before handing over the installation, the gate motor and associated components were checked to ensure that the system was correctly installed and operating as intended.
The installation also included an anti-theft bracket, providing additional physical protection for the motor once the installation was complete.
The final result can be seen in the completed installation photograph below.
Completed D6 Smart Installation in Wellington
The final stage was to complete the installation, check the gate motor and confirm that the automated gate was operating correctly.
The completed installation includes the Centurion D6 Smart, the reinforced mounting base and an anti-theft bracket fitted to provide additional physical protection for the motor.

With the installation complete, the gate was tested to ensure that the motor and gate system were operating correctly.
This Wellington installation is another example of the approach we take to gate motor installations: selecting the appropriate equipment, preparing a solid mounting structure and paying attention to the details that can affect the long-term reliability of the installation.
In this case, the customer already knew the Centurion D6 Smart from a previous installation we had completed for him. Although a D5 Smart would have been suitable for the domestic application, he specifically wanted another D6 Smart because of his positive experience with the earlier installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Centurion D6 Smart suitable for a domestic gate?
Yes. The D6 Smart can be used for residential sliding gates, and it is rated for gates weighing up to 600 kg. The correct motor should always be selected according to the gate’s weight, condition, usage and installation requirements.
Would a Centurion D5 Smart have been suitable for this installation?
Yes. For this customer’s intended domestic use, a D5 Smart would have been suitable. The customer nevertheless specifically requested the D6 Smart because we had previously installed a D6 Smart at another property of his several years ago and he had been happy with its performance.
What is the difference between the D5 Smart and D6 Smart?
One of the main differences is their rated gate capacity. The D5 Smart is designed for gates up to 500 kg, while the D6 Smart is rated for gates up to 600 kg. Both are 24V DC Smart-series sliding gate operators and are designed for up to 150 operations per day.
Why did this customer choose the D6 Smart?
The customer had previous experience with a D6 Smart installed by Cape Winelands Automation at another property. Because that installation had provided reliable service over several years, he specifically wanted the same model for his new Wellington installation.
Can Cape Winelands Automation install a Centurion gate motor in Wellington?
Yes. Cape Winelands Automation provides gate motor installations, replacements, upgrades, servicing and repairs in Wellington and surrounding areas. We can assess the gate and recommend suitable equipment based on the gate, usage and installation conditions.
Can an existing gate motor be repaired instead of replaced?
In many cases, yes. The cause of the problem should be assessed before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Mechanical problems, worn components, electrical faults and other issues can sometimes be repaired, depending on the condition of the motor and gate system.
How important is the gate installation itself?
The gate motor is only one part of an automated sliding gate system. The gate must move correctly, the mounting structure needs to be secure and the motor and rack need to be correctly positioned and aligned. Proper installation can therefore be an important part of achieving reliable operation.
