The D20 Smart is therefore positioned above the D10 Smart in terms of gate mass and pushing force. The published D20 Smart specifications allow for gates up to 2,000 kg, compared with 1,000 kg for the D10 Smart.

However, gate weight should not be the only consideration. Wheel condition, track resistance, rack alignment, gate construction and daily operating requirements all affect the correct motor selection.

D20 Smart and the New D20 SMΔRT+

Centurion has announced that the original D20 Smart is being replaced by the next-generation D20 SMΔRT+. Existing D20 Smart operators remain supported, while new D20 SMΔRT+ units provide the newer connected platform.

For a new Wellington installation, Cape Winelands Automation can assess the current availability and recommend the appropriate D20-generation operator for the application.

D20 Smart Features

The Centurion D20 Smart is built for heavy-duty sliding gates where a standard residential operator may not provide sufficient capacity. It is designed for commercial and industrial applications and can handle gates up to 2,000 kg.

Heavy-Duty Drive System

The D20 Smart uses a robust gearbox and a 13-tooth pinion to provide the torque required for large sliding gates.

This makes it suitable for demanding installations where gate weight and operating conditions place greater demands on the drive system.

High-Torque Performance

The D20 Smart provides a starting push force of up to 52 kgf and a rated push force of up to 39 kgf.

However, high motor capacity does not remove the need for a properly prepared gate. Wheels, track, rack and gate alignment still need to be correct.

High-Volume Operation

The D20 Smart is designed for high-demand installations and is specified for up to 750 operations per day.

This makes it suitable for applications such as industrial entrances, busy commercial properties, estates and other high-traffic access points.

Battery-Driven Operation

The D20 Smart operates from a 24V battery-driven system using two 7.2Ah 12V batteries as its standard battery capacity.

The battery system allows the gate to continue operating during suitable mains-power interruptions. Battery capacity can also be increased where longer standby requirements apply.

Security Features

The D20 Smart includes security-focused features such as a built-in tamper alarm and a theft-deterrent cage.

It can also integrate with additional security equipment, including the SMΔRT siren and GLX900 electric gate lock.

Safety Integration

The D20 Smart supports safety equipment including the Photon SMΔRT wireless safety beams.

This can allow a cleaner installation where wireless safety equipment is appropriate for the gate and site conditions.

Flexible Inputs and Outputs

The D20 Smart controller provides six configurable I/O channels. Four can be configured as inputs or low-current outputs, while two provide higher-current output capability.

This gives the installer flexibility when integrating accessories and other gate-control equipment.

MyCentsys Pro

The D20 Smart can be configured and managed using the MyCentsys Pro installer app, providing tools for setup, diagnostics and system management.

Built for the Complete Gate System

The D20 Smart is a powerful operator, but reliable operation still depends on the complete gate installation.

Before installation, Cape Winelands Automation can assess the gate wheels, track, rack, guide rollers, mounting structure, electrical supply, safety equipment and access control.

For a heavy gate, reducing unnecessary mechanical resistance is particularly important. A properly prepared gate allows the D20 Smart to perform its intended function without relying on excessive motor force to overcome mechanical problems.

Is the D20 Smart Suitable for Your Wellington Gate?

The Centurion D20 Smart is designed for heavy-duty sliding gates where the demands of the installation go beyond the requirements of a typical residential or lighter commercial gate.

Centurion specifies the D20 Smart for sliding gates up to 2,000 kg and up to 25 metres in length, with a maximum of 750 operations per day.

Applications for the D20 Smart

In Wellington, the D20 Smart can be considered for:

  • Heavy industrial sliding gates

  • Commercial entrances

  • Large estate entrances

  • Security complexes with demanding gate requirements

  • Industrial properties

  • Large farm and agricultural entrances

  • Heavy steel sliding gates

  • High-traffic access-controlled entrances

  • Large gates requiring substantial starting force

Gate Weight Is Only One Factor

A gate weighing close to 2,000 kg requires more than simply fitting a powerful motor.

Before recommending a D20 Smart, we assess the complete gate system, including:

  • Gate wheels and bearings

  • Track condition

  • Gate alignment

  • Guide rollers

  • Rack condition

  • Rack and pinion alignment

  • Gate resistance

  • Motor mounting structure

  • Daily operating requirements

  • Access-control equipment

  • Safety equipment

  • Electrical supply and battery requirements

A heavy gate with damaged wheels or excessive track resistance can place unnecessary demand on the motor. Therefore, mechanical problems should be corrected rather than relying on the D20 Smart to overcome them.

D20 Smart for High-Traffic Entrances

The D20 Smart is also designed for high-cycle applications. Its published rating allows up to 750 operations per day.

This can make it suitable for demanding entrances where vehicles move through the gate throughout the day.

However, a high daily operation count does not automatically mean that every busy gate requires a D20. Gate mass, mechanical resistance and the complete operating environment must all be considered.

D20 Smart vs Smaller Gate Motors

For a normal residential sliding gate, a D20 Smart may provide considerably more capacity than necessary.

A D6 Smart can suit larger residential applications, while the D10 Smart is designed for heavier commercial and industrial requirements. The D20 Smart moves further into the heavy-industrial category.

The correct choice therefore depends on the actual gate rather than simply selecting the largest available operator.

Professional D20 Assessment in Wellington

Cape Winelands Automation can inspect the gate, assess its mechanical condition and consider the expected daily traffic before recommending a D20 Smart.

Where an existing motor can be repaired or a smaller operator remains suitable, replacement with a D20 Smart may not be necessary. Where the gate genuinely requires greater capacity, the D20 Smart can form part of a complete heavy-duty gate solution.

D20 Smart vs D10 Smart

The Centurion D10 Smart and D20 Smart are both designed for demanding sliding-gate applications. However, they occupy different positions within the heavy-duty range.

The D10 Smart is rated for gates up to 1,000 kg, while the D20 Smart increases the maximum gate mass to 2,000 kg and provides greater starting and rated pushing force. Both models are specified for up to 750 operations per day.

SpecificationD10 SmartD20 Smart
Motor voltage24V DC24V DC
Maximum gate massUp to 1,000 kgUp to 2,000 kg
Maximum daily operationsUp to 750Up to 750
Maximum gate lengthUp to 50 mUp to 25 m
Maximum gate speedUp to 26 m/minUp to 18 m/min

Battery-drivenYesYes
ApplicationCommercial / industrialHeavy commercial / industrial
Receiver capacityUp to 1,500 remotesUp to 1,500 remotes
Manual releaseLockable key releaseLockable key release

The published figures show that the main distinction is not simply daily traffic. Both operators have a 750-operation daily rating. The D20’s major advantage is its greater gate-mass capacity and higher pushing force.

When the D10 Smart May Be Suitable

The D10 Smart can be appropriate where the gate weighs up to approximately 1,000 kg and the installation requires a heavy-duty commercial or industrial operator.

Examples can include:

  • Commercial entrances

  • Busy complexes

  • Estates

  • Business parks

  • Industrial properties

  • Large access-controlled gates

When the D20 Smart May Be More Appropriate

The D20 Smart becomes relevant when the gate is substantially heavier and the additional drive capacity is required.

For example, large steel gates, industrial entrances and heavy commercial gates may require the additional starting force and maximum gate mass capacity provided by the D20 Smart.

D20 Does Not Mean “Better” for Every Gate

A D20 Smart should not automatically replace a D10 Smart simply because it has a higher capacity.

If a gate weighs 700 kg and operates correctly, installing a D20 instead of a D10 would not necessarily provide a practical benefit. The gate’s construction, mechanical resistance, operating requirements and access-control system all need to be considered.

Likewise, a 1,500 kg gate cannot simply be treated as a larger version of a 1,000 kg installation. The wheels, track, rack, guide system and mounting structure need to be capable of handling the gate.

Choosing Between the D10 and D20

Cape Winelands Automation can assess the complete gate before recommending the appropriate operator.

We consider:

  • Gate mass

  • Gate length

  • Daily operating frequency

  • Wheel condition

  • Track condition

  • Rack and pinion alignment

  • Gate resistance

  • Guide rollers

  • Motor mounting

  • Power and battery requirements

  • Access-control requirements

  • Safety equipment

The D10 Smart and D20 Smart therefore serve different requirements within the heavy-duty gate-motor range. The correct choice depends on the actual Wellington installation rather than simply choosing the largest motor.

D20 Smart and the Current SMΔRT+ Range

Centurion has announced that the D20 SMΔRT is being transitioned to the newer D20 SMΔRT+ platform. The original D20 SMΔRT remains supported, while availability of the older model is limited to existing stock.

For a new installation, Cape Winelands Automation can advise on the current D20-generation option available for the project.

D20 Smart Installation in Wellington

Installing a Centurion D20 Smart requires more than simply mounting the motor beside the gate. Because the D20 Smart is designed for heavy commercial and industrial sliding gates, the complete gate system must be prepared correctly before commissioning.

Assessing the Gate Before Installation

Before installing the D20 Smart, we inspect the gate and its mechanical components.

The gate must move smoothly along its full travel. We therefore check the gate wheels, track, guide rollers, rack, gate alignment and mounting structure. If the gate has excessive resistance, worn components or alignment problems, we address these issues before fitting the motor.

This is especially important on large gates. A powerful motor should not be used to compensate for a gate that is mechanically difficult to move.

Preparing the Motor Foundation

The D20 Smart requires a solid and correctly positioned mounting surface.

We ensure that the foundation plate is secure, level and positioned correctly in relation to the gate and rack. The motor must have sufficient adjustment available for accurate alignment and future servicing.

A properly prepared foundation also helps maintain consistent rack and pinion engagement during the complete gate travel.

Rack and Pinion Alignment

Correct rack alignment is an important part of a reliable D20 Smart installation.

The rack must run correctly across the full length of the gate while maintaining the required clearance from the motor pinion. We check the rack position, height and alignment before final tightening.

This reduces unnecessary mechanical load and helps the D20 Smart drive the gate smoothly rather than forcing the pinion against an incorrectly positioned rack.

Electrical Supply and Cabling

The electrical installation is planned before the motor is commissioned.

We check the mains supply, isolator, cable routing, motor connections and battery installation. Additional cabling can also be provided for equipment such as access control, intercoms, safety beams and other gate accessories.

Good cable management keeps the installation organised and makes future servicing easier.

Safety Equipment and Access Control

A heavy-duty gate installation should include appropriate safety equipment.

Depending on the site requirements, the D20 Smart can be integrated with safety beams and access-control equipment. We check that safety devices operate correctly and that the access-control system communicates properly with the gate motor.

For busy Wellington complexes, estates, farms and commercial properties, this is particularly important because the gate may be operating frequently throughout the day.

Commissioning the D20 Smart

Once the motor and accessories have been installed, we commission the complete system.

We check the opening and closing operation, gate limits, movement, safety devices, manual release and access-control functions. We also test the system through repeated operating cycles to confirm that the gate and motor work together correctly.

The D20 Smart can be configured using the MyCentsys Pro application, which Centurion provides for configuring and managing compatible operators.

Final Installation Check

Before handing over the installation, we inspect the complete system rather than checking only the motor.

The final inspection includes:

  • Gate movement and mechanical resistance

  • Gate wheels and track

  • Rack and pinion alignment

  • Motor mounting

  • Electrical connections

  • Battery operation

  • Safety beams

  • Access-control equipment

  • Manual release

  • Opening and closing limits

  • Overall gate operation

The result should be a complete, correctly aligned gate automation system rather than simply a powerful motor attached to the gate.

D20 Smart Repairs and Servicing in Wellington

A D20 Smart can provide many years of service, but heavy-duty gate automation still requires regular inspection and servicing. Problems with the gate, rack, power supply or accessories can place unnecessary strain on the motor.

Cape Winelands Automation can assess D20 Smart installations in Wellington to identify the cause of a fault before recommending a repair or replacement.

Common D20 Smart Problems

A D20 Smart installation can develop problems for several different reasons.

Common issues include:

  • Gate moving slowly or unevenly

  • Motor stopping during operation

  • Excessive resistance from the gate

  • Worn or incorrectly positioned rack

  • Damaged or worn pinion

  • Loose motor mounting

  • Battery or charging problems

  • Access-control faults

  • Safety-beam problems

  • Manual release problems

  • Electrical or control-card faults

  • Sand, dirt or insects inside the operator

The motor is not always the source of the problem. Therefore, we inspect the complete gate system before replacing expensive components.

D20 Smart Gate and Mechanical Checks

The condition of the gate has a direct effect on motor performance.

During a service, we can inspect the wheels, track, guide rollers, rack and gate alignment. We also check that the gate moves freely and does not place excessive mechanical load on the operator.

If the mechanical system needs attention, repairing those components can be an important part of restoring reliable operation.

D20 Smart Rack and Pinion Inspection

The rack and pinion are critical components of a sliding gate system.

We check the rack engagement and inspect the pinion for excessive wear. Incorrect rack alignment can affect gate movement and increase mechanical stress.

Where necessary, we can correct the alignment or replace worn components as part of the repair.

D20 Smart Electrical and Battery Checks

The D20 Smart uses a battery-driven system, so the batteries, charger and electrical connections form an important part of the installation.

During servicing, we can check the power supply, battery condition, charging system, connections and relevant control equipment.

A fault that appears to be a motor problem can sometimes originate from the power or battery system instead.

Access Control and Safety Equipment

A D20 Smart is often part of a larger access-control system.

We can inspect associated equipment such as access-control devices, receivers, loop detectors and infrared safety beams where these form part of the installation.

The objective is to make sure the motor, safety equipment and access-control system operate together correctly.

Preventative D20 Smart Maintenance

Regular servicing can identify developing problems before they result in a complete gate failure.

Centurion’s maintenance guidance includes regular checks of the motor mounting, sand build-up, rack and pinion engagement, pinion condition, manual-release mechanism and theft-deterrent equipment where fitted.

For busy Wellington properties, preventative maintenance can be particularly useful because a gate failure can affect residents, staff, customers or visitors.

D20 Smart Repair or Replacement?

Not every D20 Smart fault requires a new motor.

We first assess the condition of the existing operator and the gate system. If the motor can be repaired economically, repairing the affected component may be the appropriate solution.

If the operator has reached the end of its practical service life, or if a newer system offers a better solution, we can assess replacement options.

It is also important to consider the current Centurion product range. The original D20 SMΔRT has been discontinued as Centurion transitions to the newer SMΔRT+ range, although Centurion states that support for the discontinued SMΔRT operators will continue for the foreseeable future.

D20 Smart Upgrades and Replacement Options in Wellington

A D20 Smart installation does not necessarily need to be replaced simply because it is an older operator. If the motor is still in good condition, servicing and repairing the existing system may be the most practical solution.

However, when an older D20 Smart reaches the end of its useful service life, replacement provides an opportunity to improve the complete gate system.

Repairing an Existing D20 Smart

Where possible, we first assess the existing D20 Smart before recommending replacement.

A repair may be suitable when the motor, gearbox and control equipment remain in good condition. We can also address related problems such as worn rack, damaged wheels, poor alignment, battery problems or faulty accessories.

Repairing the actual cause of the problem can restore reliable operation without replacing a motor unnecessarily.

Upgrading the Complete Gate System

A motor upgrade can also be an opportunity to improve other parts of the installation.

Depending on the condition of the gate, an upgrade may include:

  • New or upgraded gate wheels

  • Track repairs or improvements

  • New rack

  • Guide-wheel replacement

  • Improved motor mounting

  • Battery replacement

  • New safety beams

  • Access-control upgrades

  • Improved electrical supply

  • Anti-theft protection

  • Improved cable management

The correct combination depends on the condition and requirements of the individual gate.

Replacing an Older D20 Smart

Centurion is transitioning from the original SMΔRT operator range to the newer SMΔRT+ range. The D20 SMΔRT is one of the models being discontinued, while the D20 SMΔRT+ is its replacement. Existing D20 SMΔRT operators remain supported, and remaining original units are available while stock lasts.

For a Wellington property requiring a new heavy-duty operator, the D20 SMΔRT+ provides the current-generation option for gates up to 2,000 kg and 25 metres, with up to 750 operations per day.

D20 SMΔRT+ Connectivity

One of the major differences with the newer SMΔRT+ generation is built-in connectivity.

The D20 SMΔRT+ includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, together with remote system visibility through the MyCentsys platform. This can provide useful information for owners and installers and can assist with diagnostics and support.

For commercial properties, estates and complexes, connected automation can provide additional visibility over the gate system instead of relying entirely on a physical site visit when a problem occurs.

Choosing the Correct Replacement

A replacement should still be selected according to the actual gate.

We assess the gate weight, length, daily traffic, mechanical condition, access-control requirements, safety equipment and available power before recommending an operator.

A larger motor is not automatically the correct solution. The goal is to match the operator to the gate and the way the entrance is used.

For Wellington customers with an existing D20 Smart, we can therefore assess whether the better option is repair, refurbishment or replacement with the current D20 SMΔRT+ generation.

D20 Smart Maintenance in Wellington

Regular maintenance helps keep a D20 Smart installation operating reliably, especially where a heavy gate is used frequently.

The motor is only one part of the system. Gate wheels, track, rack, pinion, batteries, electrical connections and safety equipment all need to remain in good condition.

What We Check During a D20 Smart Service

A D20 Smart service can include an inspection of:

  • Gate wheels and track

  • Guide rollers

  • Rack and pinion

  • Motor mounting

  • Battery condition

  • Charging system

  • Electrical connections

  • Manual release mechanism

  • Safety beams

  • Access-control equipment

  • Theft-deterrent equipment where fitted

  • Dirt, sand and insect contamination inside the operator

Rack and Pinion Inspection

The rack and pinion should maintain correct engagement throughout the gate’s movement.

We check for excessive wear, incorrect alignment and abnormal movement. If the rack is incorrectly positioned or the pinion shows excessive wear, we can correct the installation or replace the affected component.

Centurion’s maintenance guidance recommends checking rack and pinion engagement and pinion condition every six months.

Motor Mounting and Foundation

Heavy-duty equipment needs a secure mounting system.

We check that the motor mounting remains secure and that the foundation and mounting hardware have not developed movement. Loose mounting can affect alignment and place unnecessary stress on the drive system.

Batteries and Power System

Because the D20 Smart uses a battery-driven 24V system, battery condition is an important part of preventative maintenance.

We can check the batteries, charging system and electrical connections and identify problems that could cause unreliable operation during a power interruption.

Cleaning and Environmental Checks

Wellington conditions can expose gate motors to dust, sand, insects and other environmental contamination.

Centurion recommends checking for insect infestations every three months and checking for sand build-up every six months on the D20 Smart.

Keeping the operator clean and free from contamination can help prevent avoidable problems.

Maintenance for Busy Properties

For complexes, estates, farms and commercial entrances, regular maintenance can be particularly useful because the gate may perform many operating cycles.

Instead of waiting for a complete failure, we can inspect the system and identify worn or developing problems during a scheduled service.

D20 Smart Wellington FAQs

Is the Centurion D20 Smart suitable for a heavy gate?

Yes. The D20 Smart was designed for heavy-duty commercial and industrial sliding gates. It can handle gates up to 2,000 kg and 25 metres, depending on the installation requirements and operating conditions.

How many operations can a D20 Smart handle per day?

The D20 range is designed for high-volume applications. The current D20 SMΔRT+ is rated for up to 750 operations per day. Actual suitability still depends on the gate, installation and operating conditions.

Is the D20 Smart suitable for a residential gate?

It can be used where the gate and operating requirements justify a heavy-duty operator. However, a D20 is not automatically the correct choice for every residential gate. Gate weight, size, daily traffic and mechanical condition should all be considered before selecting the motor.

What should I check if my D20 Smart is struggling to move the gate?

Start with the gate itself. Check the wheels, track, guide rollers, rack and alignment before assuming the motor has failed.

A gate that has developed excessive resistance can place additional load on the operator. A proper inspection can identify whether the problem is mechanical, electrical or related to the motor.

Can a D20 Smart operate during a power failure?

Yes. The D20 Smart uses a battery-driven system, allowing the automated gate to continue operating when mains power is unavailable, provided the batteries are in suitable condition.

Can a D20 Smart be repaired?

Yes. Many faults can be diagnosed and repaired without replacing the complete operator. The correct approach is to inspect the motor and the rest of the gate system before deciding whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Is the D20 Smart still available?

The original D20 SMΔRT has been discontinued as Centurion moves to the SMΔRT+ range. Existing SMΔRT operators remain supported, while remaining stock is available until depleted.

The current replacement is the D20 SMΔRT+.

What is the difference between the D20 Smart and D20 Smart+?

The D20 SMΔRT+ is the newer generation. It retains the heavy-duty 2,000 kg gate capability while adding features such as built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, expanded accessory integration and connected support functions.

Can Cape Winelands Automation service a D20 Smart in Wellington?

Yes. Cape Winelands Automation provides gate motor repairs, servicing, installations and upgrades in Wellington. We can inspect the complete gate system and determine whether the existing D20 requires maintenance, repair or replacement.

Should I replace my D20 Smart with a D20 Smart+?

Not necessarily. If an existing D20 Smart is operating reliably, there may be no reason to replace it simply because a newer model is available.

If the operator has developed major faults or reached the end of its practical service life, however, the D20 SMΔRT+ can be considered as the current-generation replacement.
